Propane and Storage Containers:

Propane is transported and delivered as a liquid, but is used in its vapor state (see photo below). Successful propane tank fire control requires an adequate, uninterruptible and reliable water supply.

A call for technical assistance from your local propane company should be made as soon as possible. Fires involving propane tanks can cause secondary exposure problems. Full protective clothing (SCBA, PASS device, turnout coat and pants, gloves and boots and a hood made of fire resistant material) is required for propane fire and leak control operations.

Propane fires should not be extinguished unless the fuel source can be isolated. Unignited propane is heavier than air and may accumulate in low areas and inside buildings. Leaking, unignited propane may be dispersed with narrow angle fog nozzles. Rapid application of water on the outside of the tank at the point of flame impingement and on the top half of the tank shell above the liquid propane level can reduce the likelihood of container failure by lowering the external temperature of the shell of the exposed tank
