Eastern Shore Natural Gas

Eastern Shore Natural Gas Company (ESNG) is our natural gas interstate transmission subsidiary. ESNG owns and operates a 517-mile Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulated interstate transmission pipeline system that delivers natural gas from four upstream pipeline interconnection points in Pennsylvania and Delaware to customers along the Delmarva Peninsula, including Chesapeake Utilities’ distribution systems.

Since the pipeline became Open Access in 1997, ESNG has more than quadrupled its pipeline capacity and now extends service southeast toward Lewes, Delaware, west to Cecil County, Maryland, and south across the state of Delaware and into Maryland. ESNG’s service territory currently extends as far as the Maryland Eastern Shore towns of Cambridge, Easton, Federalsburg, Hurlock, Salisbury, Berlin and Ocean City.

Over the last decades, ESNG has expanded to provide firm transportation service for two stand-alone electric power generators — Energy Center Dover, LLC (formerly NRG Energy Center) and Calpine Corporation — and has added more than 87 miles of pipeline and 12,625 horsepower of compression to meet growth and enhance reliability for current and future customers in Delaware and Maryland.

As of November 2019, ESNG was permitted to include renewable natural gas (RNG) utilization and standards in its tariff. The ESNG system includes an interconnection for the injection of RNG production, with RNG sales to Chesapeake Utilities and Sandpiper Energy, and virtual pipeline solutions through our affiliate Marlin Gas Services.
