What’s It Really Like to Intern at Chesapeake Utilities?

Former intern Victoria Langevin talks about meaningful projects, finding her confidence and turning a summer opportunity into a full-time role.

Considering applying for a summer internship with Chesapeake Utilities? You might be wondering what your experience would be, whether interns get to contribute and what can happen after the internship ends.

We asked Victoria Langevin, a former intern who now works for the company full-time, to tell us about her experience. When she applied, she wasn’t looking for a guaranteed job after graduation. Like many students, she was exploring different opportunities and looking for a place where she could learn, build useful skills and get a better sense of what she wanted to do next.

“All three of my interviewers were incredibly welcoming, understanding and easy to talk to. It made me feel comfortable from the beginning and gave me a glimpse into the kind of people I could potentially be working with.”

What made the internship stand out?

For Victoria, it was the chance to work on projects that mattered. Early in the summer, she helped build an organizational change management community of practice, supported an employee resource group fair and planned a volunteer event for her intern cohort.

She wasn’t watching from the sidelines or completing assignments that would disappear when the internship ended. She helped develop ideas, worked behind the scenes to bring events to life and eventually stepped into a facilitator role. Just as important, her team gave her ownership of the work.

“They didn’t treat my ideas differently because I was an intern. They gave me the space to take ownership, make decisions, try things and even make mistakes. When I did need help, they were always there to guide me through it instead of just taking over.”

Did she have to know everything on day one?

Definitely not. Victoria said one of the hardest parts of starting her internship was getting comfortable saying, “I don’t know” or “I’m confused.” She was surrounded by people with more experience and initially wanted to prove she could handle everything on her own.

Her perspective changed as she realized that asking questions wasn’t a sign that she didn’t belong. It was how she learned. Her team was willing to explain, offer guidance and let her work through challenges. Over time, she became more comfortable speaking up and more confident sharing her own ideas.

What was the experience like outside her day-to-day work?

Victoria went through the experience alongside a cohort of other interns. In-person events gave them time to step away from their regular projects, get to know one another and meet employees from across the Company. For Victoria, those connections were an important part of the experience and helped her understand more about Chesapeake Utilities beyond her own team.

“The in-person events gave us opportunities to step away from our everyday work, connect with each other as well as many employees across the company, learn more about the company and just enjoy the experience together.”

When did an internship start to feel like a career?

There wasn’t one big moment. As the summer went on, Victoria realized she cared about the projects, enjoyed working with her team and had built relationships with people who wanted to see her succeed. She could picture herself staying, continuing to learn and taking on new challenges.

When she received an offer to join the Company full-time while continuing her master’s degree, it felt like the next step in an experience she had already found valuable. “It felt like the internship wasn’t ending, but instead becoming the beginning of my career,” she said.

What does Victoria want future interns to know?
