Investing in Safety, Empowering Communities: Chesapeake Utilities Grows its Training Network
At Chesapeake Utilities Corporation, safety is more than a priority — it’s a foundational value. This year, we proudly celebrate five years of service for our first Safety Town facility in Dover, Delaware, and the opening of our second location in DeBary, Florida. These purpose-built safety training centers represent our long-term investment in the people and communities we serve.
Why Safety Town?
Our Safety Town facilities provide immersive, hands-on training environments for employees and contractors who build, maintain and operate our energy infrastructure. These centers allow team members to practice technical skills, emergency response and safety procedures in real-world scenarios — before they’re needed in the field.
The Dover facility, built in 2020 on the Company’s Energy Lane campus, includes training classrooms, equipment storage and shed-style homes built by Polytech High School students. These structures simulate the residential settings where our employees work daily. The DeBary facility, modeled after Dover’s, adds specialized environments incorporating Floridian construction materials to simulate gas leaks, utility locating, leak detection and corrosion monitoring.
Benefits to Chesapeake Utilities and the Communities We Serve
By providing real-life training experiences, our Safety Town facilities ensure our teams are better equipped to handle emergency situations, maintain infrastructure and perform safely and efficiently. The result is a stronger, more confident workforce and a safer community.
, Safety Town also serves as a training hub for regional first responders. Chesapeake Utilities has hosted more than 500 training sessions with fire, EMS and law enforcement teams. These sessions build trust, align emergency procedures and reinforce the importance of coordination in crisis scenarios.
To further support first responders, we’ve paired each facility’s opening with a charitable donation. During the DeBary ribbon-cutting, we presented a $10,000 contribution to the Florida Fire Chiefs’ Foundation in support of their training and education programs.
Continuous Commitment to Safety
Both facilities offer dynamic learning experiences that combine classroom instruction with field practice. Training topics include:
- Emergency response coordination
- Infrastructure inspections
- Main and service line installation and repair
- Propane tank safety
- Valve operation and meter maintenance
- Confined space training
- Utility line locating and excavation safety
As industry needs evolve, the curriculum will continue to grow, ensuring our workforce remains at the forefront of safety and technical excellence. Our Safety Town facilities are more than training grounds — they’re proof of our company’s commitment to building a strong safety culture. By investing in our people and working closely with first responders, we’re not just improving operations — we’re helping protect the communities we proudly serve.
Chesapeake Utilities’ Safety Town facilities demonstrate the power of preparation and partnership. As we look back on five years of success in Delaware and expand into Florida, our mission is unchanged: to deliver energy that makes life better — safely, reliably and responsibly .
