Compliance With Maryland’s New Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS)

Home|SHARING

Maryland’s Climate Solutions Now Act of 2022 requires commercial and industrial buildings to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

As part of their effort to achieve net-zero emissions by the year 2040, the Maryland Department of the Environment is required to keep track of the energy usage of larger buildings.

Key Requirements:

  • Annual Reporting: Building owners must report their energy consumption data to the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE).

  • Data Requests: Request energy usage data from your utility provider.

  • Energy Star Portfolio Manager: Report data through the Energy Star Portfolio Manager web service.

  • Data Retention: Maintain five years of energy usage data.

Maryland Department of Environment (MDE) Assistance: MDE will provide a list of potentially covered buildings and notify owners via mail, email or public posting. Please note that failure to receive notification does not exempt owners from compliance.

Customers of Chesapeake Utilities that possess a facility that is 35,000 square feet or larger may request monthly energy usage data to comply with this regulation by filling out the form below OR sending an email request to [email protected]
