When Nature Calls, We Answer: Osprey Nest Rebuilt by FPU Crew

Sustainability

At Chesapeake Utilities Corporation, our mission extends beyond powering homes—it includes energizing hearts and communities. And sometimes, it means answering the call of the wild.

Earlier this summer in Fernandina Beach, Florida, a beloved pair of ospreys faced an unexpected crisis. For years, they’d nested atop a stately pine along the Ron Sapp Egans Creek Greenway, a familiar sight for locals and nature lovers alike. But on June 10, the aging tree collapsed, taking their longtime home with it.

The community didn’t miss a beat. Neighbors quickly organized funding to build a new nesting site, reflecting a shared commitment to protecting our local wildlife. That’s when our Florida Public Utilities team got the call—and were proud to step in.

Operation Osprey: A Team Effort

After reviewing the request, our electric operations team wasted no time. Led by electric operations supervisor Jared Grandy and electric operations manager Mark Cutshaw, our linemen—Donnie Maxwell, Todd Stauffer, Kade Purvis and Kameron Dalton—assembled on June 20 to bring the new nesting spot to life.

With precision and heart, they installed a 68-foot pole equipped with a custom-built platform the size of a twin bed. The site, located on HOA common property, offered the ospreys a safe and elevated perch close to their old stomping grounds.

A Timely Arrival

Just as the final tamping  was underway, one of the ospreys swooped in, circling above before landing on the new platform. Within hours, nesting materials started appearing—a clear signal that the birds had accepted their new home.

“This experience reminded me of the incredible impact we can have when communities and businesses work together,” said Grandy. “It’s moments like these that make me proud to lead such an extraordinary group of individuals and to work for a company that is always ready to help.”

Powering More Than Electricity

Thanks to the collaboration with Keep Nassau Beautiful and the tireless efforts of our crew, the installation restored not just a nest, but a symbol of hope, resilience and community spirit. It was a testament to how quickly we can mobilize—not just for outages and emergencies, but for moments that truly matter.
